The Beauty of Aging - An Honor Not a Punishment

Aging is one of those things that has different meanings to different people. All it really means is getting older, so it applies to all of us until the day we die. What we make of it is up to us.

Those who are positive about aging can have a long and fruitful life even after they have retired from their main occupation. They can remain happy, adventurous, learning and achieving new things; they may even find ways to look younger again. All of that can be reflected in their health, so despite the inevitable signs of aging skin, and graying hair, an elderly woman can radiate with a youth glow.

For some people, though, growing old can be something they look on negatively. As with anything in life, see it as negative and it will be. Those who focus to the point of desperation on their fading looks, the diminishing years ahead of them and the inevitability of death, aging can seem like a punishment and an endurance. That is up to them. They make it that way.

How old you are is a matter of fact, recorded on your birth certificate. How old you feel is up to you about aging; your own attitude. Anyway, age is all relative; as a teenager I though 30 and over was ancient, at 56 I find it difficult to decide what old age is. It is certainly not something I have in sight. I always think 100 is a nice round number to call old, but then when you get there, it must be enticing to head for 120, even set a world record.

Set out to be happy and healthy as the aging process unfolds, and there is a very good chance you will be. That health and happiness will reflect in your demeanor and your smile; that smile will make you look, and feel, younger.

Having an active life, including social life and physical activity, are keys to aging youthfully. Being positive about new things can be a great boost, so starting new hobbies, learning new things, traveling to new places. All of this will help you "think young"; thinking young will help you be young.

Of course, reality dictates that the older you get, the more likely you are to suffer health problems. However, by keeping fit, following a good diet and sensible supplementation, your immune system should be in fine fettle to fend off or minimise some of the health problems others are experiencing.

If at all possible do not dwell on the past, at least not in a negative way. Celebrating an anniversary with smiles and realism is fine; wishing things could have been different will eat into your years like a fungus.

Overall, though, how you react to aging is under your control. You have to make the decision whether to be positive or negative.
