Heart Disease Amongst Women

Also: Symptoms of Heart Disease

Heart disease is not a single disease as such, but a collection of symptoms that affect the circulatory and cardiovascular systems. In its simplest definition heart disease is several abnormal conditions that arise in the heart or its blood vessels. Some people expand that to include hypertension and stroke, although there can be many underlying causes of hypertension, and stroke occurs in the brain. High blood pressure (hypertension) often exists in those who have heart disease or stroke, which is why doctors are keen to monitor and control hypertension in their patients.

Keeping to the simple definition, which is more accurate, heart disease can be: a. coronary artery disease, which can be broken down into heart attacks or angina; b. heart failure, which means the heart is unable to pump blood through the body as effectively as it should, which can damage organs not receiving an adequate supply of blood; c. Heart arrhythmias, which are changes in the heart beat of an exceptional nature.

While some people are unfortunately born with, or develop, heart defects, heart disease is almost an entirely modern development. In the United States, more people die from heart related problems than all cancers put together; getting close to a million people a year now. It is the number one killer in the country, and more than half are women. That may surprise you: more women die from heart disease than men.

Looking after your heart and circulatory system is therefore a key part of a woman's preventative fight against illness. That is why you will find other articles related to heart disease elsewhere on this web site.
