The Health Problems Associated With a Woman's Menopause

What is Menopause?

Menopause in a woman occurs when menstruation stops, usually in middle age, for more than a year. It is also sometimes called "the change of life." It is the second of women's major changes of life, the first being puberty and the start of menstruation as a girl. The period approaching menopause is usually referred to as perimenopause, and can be referred to by doctors as long as 10 to 15 years prior to the onset of full menopause.

Menopause is, of course, perfectly natural. A woman's child bearing age is intended to be when she is at peak health, strength and fitness, which is why menopause usually takes place at 50 plus years of age. Some younger women can experience menopause, and surgical menopause takes place if a woman has her ovaries removed in a hysterectomy operation.

Every woman will go through menopause if she lives long enough, and in a First World country that is likely to be the case. It is a stage of life, a transition, in which many hormonal changes take place, so it is not surprising that some women do not like the symptoms of menopause.

Those symptoms, though, are not always severe, and millions of women get through menopause on a "grin and bear it" basis. Others, though, find they cannot bear the symptoms, or would rather be without them, and seek medical treatment or look to herbal remedies to make this natural process easier to live through.

It is far better, of course, to deal naturally with what is a very natural process. Some Western doctors, and drug companies, heavily promote hormone replacement therapy, but with all the well publicized side effects of HRT, natural treatments are increasingly sought by some women who do not trust drugs or are aware of the specific problems associated with HRT.
